| 4/05/09 Shalee Lehning: Lowe's Senior All-American Shalee was named a first team All-American by Lowe's today. Here's the announcement from Sports Information, and the announcement from the Senior Class Award site. Unfortunately Shalee, who strongly led in fan voting for the women's basketball Senior Class Award, was not named. That award went to another Big 12 player who we've grown a little weary of hearing about. |

| 3/22/09 "She is a special, special point guard." "She just knows where every player is out on the floor," Drexel head coach Denise Dillon said of Shalee Lehning. "She sets the defense up, she draws the defense, she kicks it out, and she finds the open player. In the years I have been coaching basketball and the years playing, I have not seen a point guard with that much talent with the ball, knowing where every kid is on the floor. She is a special, special point guard. I will enjoy watching her from this point forward, but it was tough to see her out there against us tonight." |
| 3/21/09 Cats squeeze by Drexel by 24 points! At least that's the way the ESPN announcers told the story. You'd never know that Deb Patterson cleared the bench tonight except for Shalin, who is still recovering. Shalee would have registered yet another triple-double, had she not been on the bench for nine minutes. She was one rebound and five points short in 31 minutes of play. Zanotti was awesome on defense, and Gipson had 18 points. Kari and Ashley each had 11 points. Here's the on the game, via the Big 12 site.

| 3/15/09 2009 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Selection Show Don't bother trying to find out about this show from the incredibly worthless NCAA Web site! I got the details from the Texas A&M WBB site. The show will be on ESPN and ESPNU on Monday, March 16 at 6 P.M. CDT. You can also visit ESPN360.com. Seriously... I challenge anyone to find this simple paragraph of information from the NCAA.
In addition, according to the ESPN Programming Guide, there will be extended coverage of the tournament in the hour following the selection show, only on ESPNU.

| 3/09/09 All-Big 12 Conference: Shalee, Ashley and Marlies The Big 12 Conference has just released the All-Big 12 honors for 2009. Shalee and Ashley made the first team, and Marlies is second-team. Congratulations to our outstanding players on these accomplishments! |

| 3/07/09 Cats defeat Colorado / Shalee Lehning records fifth career triple-double While playing 32 minutes in her ongoing recovery from mono, Shalee left Boulder with her third triple-double of the season (from 16 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists), the fifth of her career. The NCAA career record is seven, and Shalee is now in third place all-time. We all know Shalee well enough to know she would credit her teammates for making the shots she set them up for, but she's not #2 in the country in assists by accident.
Marlies had a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds, leaving her with 45 points for the week. Ashley added 13 points, and Kari had nine. One other thing: Shalee shot 70% from the field.

| 2/19/09 Shalee Lehning's #5 jersey will be retired. Kansas State University announced today that on March 1, Shalee's jersey will be retired. I've been predicting this throughout the season, and couldn't be more thrilled about this announcement. Be sure to click the link here and be reminded of all of Shalee's achievements. I've been at K-State since 1970, and over that time I think of three players who played with 100% effort, were always unselfish and were exceptional role models and leaders, on and off the court: Lon Kruger, Steve Henson and Shalee Lehning. Our women's basketball program has had so many exceptional young women during the Patterson era. Shalee is always quick to recognize her teammates. Now the time has come for the university to thank Shalee for what by any measure I can think of has been the finest example of leadership and team play ever witnessed in this program.

| 1/27/09 Ashley Sweat leads the Cats over Nebraska Ashley had another great offensive night, contributing 18 points in a hard-fought win over NU. Not only did she lead the team, she hit eight of 10 from the field. Can you earn a double-double off steals? Shalee had eight rebounds and five steals. I was just wondering, for future reference. When things were close in the first half, I thought we should put in Shalin Spani. She made three sweet threes. The story of the game might be that the Cats hit 50% from the field in the second half, to Nebraska's 39%. |
| 1/24/09 Cats improve to 17 - 1 in Lawrence It was a great feeling walking into Frog Allen Field House this morning knowing the Cats were going to win. I also knew it wouldn't be a pushover, because the Squawks had a score (namely, a 33-point score) to settle. The largest lead of the game may have been the nine-point margin of victory. The Cats weren't playing as loose as usual. They clearly wanted this victory, and I felt they played somewhat lower-risk ball than is usually the case. Once again, we saw the confidence gained from the conference championship keeping them composed when the Yellow-Shoed Bluebirds would make a run at them. Let's not go any farther without a tip of the hat to Marlies Gipson. She hit several critical jump shots to keep us in the lead. Marlies finished with 23 points, shot 66% and was perfect from the line. She also had four blocks — sufficient to keep her in third place in NCAA Division I — and let's not overlook her eight rebounds. Ashley Sweat was big-time for us, as well. She went 7 of 11 in field goals for 64%, and hit 4 of 5 free throws, some of them very valuable for keeping our momentum. Shalee Lehning had 13 points, and hit 4 of 5 on free throws. Her six assists moved her into third place in the Big 12 career assist list, as you can see in the table above. K-State fans did a nice job of showing up for this early call in Larry. Once again we outnumbered KU fans, but we didn't fill the building, so let's work on that for next year. It was fascinating to watch Coach P in time outs. I sat behind the team for a number of years, and today I saw a different approach. She virtually never drew up a play. Instead, she was extremely animated, acting out things she had seen on the court. With this veteran team, she doesn't need to teach the game. She seemed to be demonstrating maneuvers that she didn't want to see any more. She was intense, seeming to be telling the Cats that they could handle whatever was put before them, if they would focus on it. I thought it was an amazing job of coaching, well-suited to this group of players. As this is written, there are three teams in the AP Top 25 that are undefeated. Only five ranked teams have a better record. Our Cats are taking us on an exceptional ride. I hope we will all deliver the kind of support and home court advantage that this amazing team deserves.
Whoops! I'm back in here to add this tidbit: K-State has defeated KU in 16 of the last 17 meetings. The Squawks' millionaire coach, Bonnie Henrickson, now holds a rather modest 1-10 record against the K-State Cats.

| 1/04/09 Cats in the stats Shalee Lehning leads NCAA Division I in assists at 9.2 per game. Marlies Gipson is #3 in Division I in blocks per game at 3.8, and is #21 in field goal percentage, at 56.8%. Kari Kincaid is #48 in 3-point percentage, at 40.8%. Shalee is #7 in assist-to-turnover ratio. Watch out, Hawks! |
| 1/03/09 Talk about spin! (K-State 81, Central Arkansas 38) Central Arkansas coach Matt Daniel said, "This was the biggest crowd we will play in front of all year and we're starting three freshmen and a sophomore. Last year we played two Big 12 opponents, and they weren't the defending champion of the Big 12 and the point spread was greater... I think they beat us by 11 in the second half." OK, Coach, whatever you say! In the Sugar Bears' 7-22 season last year, they lost to OU 121-48, and to Okie State 107-36. The Cats won the first half tonight 46-14, then Coach P cleared the bench. Ashley played 22 of 40 minutes, and recorded 15 points. Zanotti played 17 minutes. Marlies played 23. Kari played 18. The seven non-starters averaged 13 minutes. Apparently it didn't occur to Coach Daniel that the Cats didn't score 121 because their defense was so suffocating that the Sugar Bears' possessions usually ran down the shot clock. About the Cats... Ashley Sweat, a strong candidate for Big 12 Player of the Week, scored at a clip of .68/minute, so had she played 40 minutes, there's 27 points for her. Marlies Gipson had similar numbers, with 14 points in 23 minutes, plus three sweet blocks. Captain Lehning had 12 assists in 26 minutes (.46/minute), which extrapolates to 18½ assists for a 40-minute game! Shalee is comfortably leading NCAA Division I in assists at this time. Kelsey Nelson had three beautiful three-pointers, adding 11 points. Shalin Spani added seven points, and Branshea Brown had eight. Finally, Kari Kincaid tossed in three three-pointers, finishing with 10 points.
Note: KU is reportedly bringing buses of fans next Saturday. Come on, Cat fans. Let's keep the blue out!

| 12/31/08 Here's more on triple-doubles It's not fun visiting the NCAA Web site. It is by far the hardest site to navigate I have ever seen. If you dig deep enough, you will find conflicting records. Also, when I link to something on their site, often it will be changed a few weeks later. They reorganize constantly. Anyway, it appears that it's not uncommon to have two career triple-doubles, but going beyond that is rare. Here's what the NCAA records show:

| 12/30/08 Cats 73, Washington 60 in a record-setting evening Where do we even start? OK... 12-0 is the best season start in the 40 years of K-State Women's Basketball. Shalee Lehning delivered her fourth career triple-double (19 pts. + 10 assists + 10 rebounds), the most in Big 12 history. She had one in 2006, one in 2007, one vs. Arkansas State in November, and tonight. One other player had two. I've been unable to track down the NCAA record. They don't seem to have one listed for Division I. Ashley Sweat added 22 points to her 30 from Sunday, and she has another game on Saturday. I see a Big 12 Player of the Week in her immediate future. Marlies Gipson had another fine outing, with 17 points on 8 of 12 shooting. She had six blocks in the game. Marlies and Olga have the K-State record, which is seven. The Big 12 record for blocked shots in a game is 10. I almost failed to mention that Shalee broke 1,000 career points tonight!
Alright fans: KU is coming to town on Jan. 10, and the students won't be back yet. The word on the message boards is that KU is tired of us coming over to Frog Allen Field House and messing with them, so they have booked a few buses for their game here in January. Let's squish this effort on their part.

| 12/28/08 Ashley leads the Cats to finish off Washington State, 74-59 Junior Ashley Sweat came to play. In 34 minutes of duty, she put 30 points on the board, going 14 of 19 from the field for 73%. She was one off her career record. Marlies Gipson recorded a double-double. Offensively she was solid, hitting 7 of 16 for 16 points. Marlies kept the Cats in the game with her 13 rebounds and two blocked shots. (She's #4 in Division I in blocks.) Shalee got in foul trouble and only played 27 minutes, but she still put another nine assists on the books.
K-State equaled the all-time best start for women's basketball, namely the first 11 games won. That record has stood for 40 years. Good luck against 4-5 Washington on Tuesday, Cats!

| 12/20/08 Another big night for Marlies Gipson In the Cats' win over Indiana State, Marlies joined the 1,000 point club, after adding 15 points. She shot 60% from the floor, by the way.
Oh, and one more thing: Marlies became K-State's leading career shot blocker this afternoon with her six blocks. This put her total at 209, surpassing First Team All-American Nicole Ohlde's 204. Keep in mind that Marlies missed an entire conference season when she hurt her knee. That is, Marlies broke the record in 92 games played, vs. the 126 that Ohlde took to set her record. What a tremendous senior season Ms. Gipson is having!

| 12/20/08 Cats off to best start in 40 years! Whoops! I was focused on the good news about Marlies, and have come back to point out that at 10-0, the K-State Wildcats have their best start since 1968, the first season played, when the team started with 11 wins. |

| 12/08/08 Cats return to the AP poll In a week with a 58-point victory over Alcorn State and an impressive win over a fine Arkansas team, our Cats have appeared in today's AP poll at #25. It appears that the quest for the Big 12 championship will be a challenge, as usual. Texas A&M (8-0) is #4 this week, Oklahoma (6-2) is #5, Texas (8-0) is #6, Baylor (7-1) is #10 and Oklahoma State (3-2) is #24. Half of the Big 12 teams are ranked. You start to see what Shalee and friends are talking about in the "Only One Conference" video. |
| 11/25/08 Shalee sets a K-State and Big 12 record! With 11 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists, Shalee Lehning set a school and conference record as she logged her third career triple-double in the Cats' victory over Arkansas State.
That said, let's not overlook Ashley Sweat's outstanding night. She went 7-10 from the field and 4-4 from the line for 18 points, leading all scorers. Congratulations to Ashley, Shalee and all the Cats for fine night in Arkansas.

It's wonderful, and not the least surprising, that K-State's own Shalee Lehning is one of 30 candidates for the Wooden Award, described as the most prestigious individual award in college basketball. 10/15/08 Shalee Lehning named preseason All-Big 12! Shalee was named to the Big 12 first team by the coaches of the conference. Here's the link from Sports Information. It's great to this wonderful person and tremendous competitor receive the recognition she deserves.

| 8/09/08 Media sources reporting verbal commitment from Brittany Chambers Brittany Chambers, a 5' 8" point guard from Jordan, Minnesota, has reportedly made a verbal commitment to Deb Patterson for 2009-10. A Minnesota girls' high school basketball site, gPrep, says, "Brittany Chambers, one of the state's all-time great players verbaled the Kansas State Wildcats... Chambers holds the Minnesota state record for most points scored in a tournament game, 47 points. The 5'8" guard is a great decision maker, running the fast break. She generates easy transition buckets for her team with her excellent floor vision. Chambers is a rare athlete who has the ability to take over a game at any time and against any opponent. Chambers is also an elite volleyball player." Girls Basketball Recruit, a blog from Minnesota, is also confirming the commitment.
