Attendance was 13,340, the second largest in WNIT history.

Congratulations to Claire Coggins on her
career-high 31 points vs. Idaho State!
        (accumulated in only 26 minutes)

5/06/06  Koehn vs. Wecker as professionals
Laurie Koehn and her former roommate, Kendra Wecker, faced each other in Wichita tonight. Laurie reported that it was the first time she'd ever guarded Wecker... even in practice. Here are the stories, from the Kansas City Star and the Wichita Eagle.

4/30/06  Wecker has more knee troubles
Shortly after returning to San Antonio for training for the Silver Stars, it was discovered that Kendra had a damaged meniscus in her recovering knee. Now that has been repaired, but she's facing more recovery time. Here's an article from the San Antonio Express News.

4/18/06  Mechelle Voepel has the Cats ranked next year
In a story she wrote for ESPN, the Kansas City Star writer sees good things ahead for the Cats. Any why not? Here's a team with five returning starters, Ashley and Kari on their way to Manhattan, and an average of 25 wins per season over the past five years.

4/09/06  2nd Annual State of Kansas Women's Basketball Showcase
Wecker, Koehn, McFarland, April Roadhouse and some KU players who will go unnamed played Kansas high school seniors on Sunday, April 9 in Salina's Bicentennial Center. It was a fun event, and worth the trip to Salina (any road trip to see Koehn and Wecker is worth it), but this production wasn't as fun as last year's, which was nonstop comedy, thanks to announcer Chris Allison. Ohlde was definitely missed, too. By the way, Kari Kincaid and Ashley Sweat were nowhere to be seen. The understanding is there were concerns about NCAA compliance issues in playing this game, and they were advised it might be a problem.

The college legends beat the high school seniors 125 - 69. The score could have been more lopsided. Generally speaking, there wasn't "in your face" defense. My friend Terry Dutton kept score in the bleachers. He had Laurie with 35, Wecker with 18 and Jessica McFarland with 24. The legends had the youngsters doubled at halftime, with a score of 59 - 28. Laurie only made nine of 16 threes, but it should be noted that three of those attempts were almost from half court, near the end of the game. In the pregame shootaround, I watched Laurie hit strings of seven, nine and 10 straight threes. It was great to see Wecker on the court again. She seems to have pretty good mobility, but she was avoiding her patented drives into the lane, which could get her hurt. We have to remember that she's hardly played in the past year.

Cat fans, this kind of event makes one appreciate the professional production of a K-State game. 1) About 1/3 of the court lights were on for the pregame shoot around. 2) When the clock ticked down to 0:00, another nine minutes were added before the game began. 3) The PA announcer was the cheesiest goofball I have ever heard. 4) They played ESPN's CD, Jock Jams Vol. 1, throughout the game. 5) They never did turn on all the available court lights, so the game was played in "twilight." And finally... 6) Don't turn off the court lights for player introductions, OK? I understand that this was supposed to be a casual and fun event, but the production of it was not what we're used to.

Regardless, it was great to see our friends McFarland, Wecker and Koehn, and they seemed to be having a wonderful time playing together again. Lehning, Dietz, Zanotti, Hamlin and Gipson came over to cheer for them. D. Scott Fritchen and Keener Tippen were there, so watch for professional coverage from GoPowercat.com and the Mercury. Here's a report from Keener. Also, here's a story, with quotes, from the Salina Journal.

        4/05/06  A fine final RPI
The College Basketball News has posted its end-of-season women's RPI, and the Cats checked in at #30. In the Big 12, Oklahoma (31 - 5) and Baylor (26 - 7) came in higher, but our Cats still came in higher than a bunch of NCAA tournament teams!

4/01/06  Of course this win matters
Read this excellent column by Joe Posnanski of the Kansas City Star, written an hour after the WNIT championship victory.

2/18/06  Kendra Wecker's team wins the Radio Shack NBA Shooting Stars competition
Team San Antonio, comprised of current Spur Tony Parker, Spurs legend Steve Kerr and WNBA star Kendra Wecker of the Silver Stars, dominated the competition in the 2006 Radio Shack Shooting Stars challenge with a record-setting time of 25.1 seconds. Here are a story and a video from the NBA.

2/07/06  Ohlde and Wecker make the Big 12 10th anniversary women's team
The votes are in. Kendra Wecker and Nicole Ohlde are two of the five honorees on the ten year team, announced today. I voted for them, of course, along with Stacey Dales-Schuman of ESPN. Congratulations to our legendary players. They should have their jerseys retired!

Champions are made when no one is watching.
