        • 4/10/05  K-State seniors play state's best in Salina
It was one last chance to see Kansas State's women's legends Nicole Ohlde, Laurie Koehn, Megan Mahoney, Brie Madden and Chelsea Domenico playing together, in the State of Kansas Women's Basketball Showcase on April 10 at Salina's Bicentennial Center.

WNBA star Jackie Stiles was on the Cats' bench, coaching with Megan Mahoney. Jackie Stiles did not play, as she is recovering from an injury. Kendra Wecker was stuck in the snow in Denver, as she had been in California as a John Wooden award finalist on April 9, so national champion Carla Sintra from Washburn subbed in at the last minute and wore #53.

One of the privileges of being coach is deciding who plays. You can't keep a good woman down, and Coach Megan Mahoney substituted herself in for one play late in the second half, hopping on her good foot to the basket, and bringing the house down with cheers when she scored two for the K-State Legends after scaring the crowd when she lost her balance and took a spill on her first attempt. In fact, Mahoney's coaching debut was so successful that she had time to eat a sub sandwich on the bench during the second half.

Ohlde, a force to be reckoned with as always, also provided nonstop comedy throughout the game, and was passed back and forth between teams two or three times. One of her Lynx jerseys was auctioned for $675 during a time out.

It was a combination of high power basketball and Harlem Globetrotters throughout the game, as announcer Chris Allison provided comedy dialogue with both players and coaches. Roommates Koehn and Ohlde were grinning throughout the game, as no one cared about the final score. In the final minute, the K-State Legends found themselves playing the entire high school all-star team, when only their coach remained on the bench.

The score was so lopsided that at the start of the second half, the high school players' coach kicked future K-Staters Shalee Lehning, JoAnn Hamlin and Marlies Gipson off his team. They stripped off their jerseys to reveal K-State Legends jerseys underneath, and played the second half of the game as Wildcats. All three Wildcat recruits turned in impressive performances. Shalee Lehning, 2005 Kansas Girls Basketball Player of the Year, wowed the crowd with awesome steals, superb ball handling and some stunning cross court no-look passes. The 5' 10" point guard will definitely see major playing time next season, and she seems to value a great assist as much as Coach Mahoney.

The best three-point shooter in NCAA history, Laurie Koehn, beat her high school opponent 24 - 9 in a three-point challenge. With about one minute to play, Laurie fired off a three-point attempt from approximately four feet inside half court. The ball was inside the rim, but bounced out. I think it's safe to say that #10 has made that shot in practice.

We need to mention that Ohlde made a dunk shot during the game, and both Ohlde and Madden made 3-pointers. Let's not forget Domenico, who displayed her usual solid point guard play and plenty of fun moments as well.

        Thanks for the memories.

As we all know, senior Megan Mahoney suffered a season-ending injury in the Big XII Tournament championship game.

I was there at the game. Just a couple of minutes earlier, after Megan made a perfect jump shot, I said to the fans beside me, "That's our Mahoney!" It was the latest of countless contributions she's made to a team that has averaged 26 wins per season during her career.

She started every game of her college career... one of the indicators of the impact she's had on our women's program's rise to prominence. She's #4 all-time in rebounding, and K-State's all-time assist leader. Megan is a great shooter. Her points total would have been much higher had she not been so unselfish in setting up teammates for baskets.

I'll remember Mahoney in the same category as Lon Kruger, Steve Henson and Terence Newman... players whose drive to succeed, excellent sportsmanship and the way they inspired both teammates and fans was nothing short of exceptional. Megan, you can come back and jump on our scorer's bench any time! Some day, I know I and a bunch of other people would love for you to be our head coach.

Here's a little .mp3 of what Megan had to say the day after her injury.
